What Is Azar?

Azar is a video chat app that puts you on camera with people from other countries. It is made by Hyperconnect, a Seoul company in the Match Group family, and Google Play has carried it since 2013, with more than 100 million installs; it also runs in a browser as Azar Web. It is a free video call app in the plain sense: opening it costs nothing, but every way in starts with signing in.

Random matching is still the core, yet Azar has grown a layer of profiles around it. You can follow members and message them, choose people from online profiles with a paid feature called Pick & Match, and look for a green Azar Badge, which marks members who have held long calls without breaking the guidelines. Subtitles can translate what the other person says when you share no language.

In short, Azar is free to open and sells choice, and it moderates by watching. Gems and plans pay for who you meet, and automated tools scan video, audio and messages for rule breaking while you talk. Azar's iPhone Changes and the Ayar Mix-Up

Azar had a turbulent 2026 on iPhone. In March its help centre said the app was unavailable on the App Store after a change in Apple's policies. By 26 September it was listed there again, and newer iPhone versions match differently: a profile card appears, you both tap Invite, then you both confirm before the camera call starts. Android and Azar Web keep the older random flow for now.

Searches for Azar often come out as ayar, and that name belongs to other services. Ayar at ayar.chat calls itself a live video chat for making friends, and AyarChat at ayarchat.com is a voice first random call site; neither homepage mentions Azar or Hyperconnect. Is Azar Free? Gems, Filters and Plans

Partly. Opening Azar and taking random matches costs nothing, and Azar says a variety of features stay free. What it sells is choice. Gems, its virtual currency, pay for gender and region preferences, for adding someone from your history as a friend and for extra calls, and each gem feature has its own rule for when the charge lands.

On top of gems sit subscriptions. The help centre lists Azar Plus, Premium and Supreme, and newer Core and Max tiers on Android and the web that add a global match pass, an age range preference, discounts on Pick & Match and no ads. Plans bought through an app store renew until you cancel there; deleting the app or the account does not stop them, and a cancelled plan runs to the end of the paid period without a refund.

Gems are harder to get back than to buy. The terms call in-app purchases final and non-refundable, say unused items are lost when an account closes, whoever closes it, and set purchased gems to expire five years after purchase. On Android, a refund request is refused once the gems are spent. Google Play lists Azar's in-app items at anything from $0.49 to $399.99 each.

iPhone users saw how quickly that can change. When the app left the App Store this spring, iOS subscriptions stopped renewing and ended on 6 April 2026. Subscribers with time left received replacement gems that had to be used within 30 days, and any money back had to be claimed from Apple rather than Azar.

Why People Look for an Alternative to Azar

Is Azar free? To open and match at random, yes, so price is rarely the first complaint. What sends people looking for an alternative is the set of conditions around each call: an account before anything else, choice sold match by match and moderation that watches the call itself. Six reasons stand out in Azar's own documents and store listing.

Taken together, the six point one way. Azar is a large app, and it keeps order by knowing who you are and watching what happens on camera, while charging for any say in who you meet. That suits people who want a managed app. It weighs on people who want a quick conversation that nobody else is watching, and the next section looks at what that watching involves.

Is Azar Safe? What Its Moderation Sees

Azar is among the more heavily moderated apps in this category, and that safety is paid for with privacy. Matches that break its guidelines are cancelled automatically, a video blur pauses the picture when its tools detect a violation, and its App Store listing says support and moderation teams work 24/7. Before a call it may also check your face on camera to judge whether you are old enough; in Australia, Europe, the UK and the US that becomes a video selfie checked by the vendors Yoti and FaceTec.

Those checks leave records. Azar says it deletes the face map from a selfie check within about a day, but keeps two audit images for up to three months and the pass or fail result for the life of the account. An optional feature called Azar Assistant turns your conversations into text to suggest interests and icebreakers, keeps those transcripts for the life of the account unless you delete them, and lets trained agents read 1% of them.

Leaving does not wipe everything at once. Deleted accounts can be restored for 90 days. After closure, the privacy policy keeps data for a three month safety window, traffic logs for one year and transaction records for ten, and keeps what it needs to stop a banned member returning for as long as it judges necessary. Because Azar belongs to Match Group, a ban on one Match Group service can follow you to the others.

None of this is hidden; it is laid out in Azar's own help centre. It does mean a heavily policed call comes with a detailed record of who you are and how you behave. If that record is what bothers you, the alternatives below are built differently.
