What Is Monkey?

Monkey is a random video chat app that puts you on camera with a stranger and lets you stay or move to the next match. People call it the Monkey app after its address, monkey.app. Starting is free, but a login comes before the first call and choosing who you meet costs extra.

Monkey launched in 2016, built by Ben Pasternak and Isaiah Turner, and the rival app Holla bought it in December 2017. Today Oviedo Interactives Limited, based in Hong Kong, runs it as an Android app, listed on Google Play under Monkey Group with more than 10 million downloads, and as a website that iPhone and computer users open in a browser.

Each match opens on a short countdown, described by Avast and AVG as 15 seconds, and both people tap to keep talking. Around the queue sit profiles with a mood and a song, cards you swipe to add friends, group video and text messages. On safety it is stricter on paper than an open queue and less private than a site with no login: AI watches live video, and your profile is discoverable by default.

Monkey on iPhone, Android and the Web

There is no Monkey app in Apple's App Store; a search of the US store on 24 September 2026 found none from its operator. Avast wrote in August 2025 that Apple removed it a few years ago without an official statement. Monkey's own FAQ now sends iPhone and desktop users to its web version, while Android users install the app.

The web version is the same service in a tab, with the same login in front of it and the same paid plan behind the filters. If what you want is a website like Monkey without the login, the options further down this page start without one.

Who Can Use Monkey and How Age Is Checked

Monkey is not open to minors, and its terms ask for more than that: by using it you confirm you have reached the age of majority where you live. Its guidelines call the minor ban a zero-tolerance rule and say AI tools and manual reviews look for underage users across the platform.

Sign-up asks for your age, and the privacy policy says Monkey may use a partner to verify it; a selfie sent for that check is deleted once your age is confirmed. The Safety Center describes what follows: AI looks for underage signals during video chats and at registration, a flagged account is restricted at once and reviewed, and a confirmed case is banned permanently.

If the system gets it wrong, the way back is an appeal with identity verification. The appeal screen in Monkey's web app asks for a photo of you holding an ID that shows your full date of birth, and warns that you have only one chance. One reviewer in July 2026 described that path: a relative leaned into the frame for a moment, the account was banned, and the ID request followed.

The written rule and the queue do not always match. Google Play reviews from August 2026 still describe meeting people who look far too young, and Monkey's replies ask users to report them. A strict rule run by software cuts both ways: it catches some people who should not be there and flags some who should.

A complaint that runs through 2026 is an account restricted after an automated flag the owner says was wrong. One reviewer in July 2026 wrote of being restricted "every 2 days" with no clear reason. The terms let Monkey end an account for any reason, without notice.

Paying Coins to Lift a Ban

Several reviewers say the app offered to lift a restriction for coins. One, in September 2026, bought Monkey Plus, found the preferences locked over a violation and was asked for more coins to unlock them. The web app has a paid unban option with a set number of attempts.

Choosing a Gender Means Paying

Free matching is random. Monkey's reply to a reviewer in September 2026 says its paid plan unlocks gender and region preferences. Men on the free tier describe being matched mostly with other men, which is where the pressure to subscribe starts.

Ads That Do Not Pay Out

Free matches and short filter trials can be topped up by watching ads. The most liked recent complaint on this, from February 2026, describes six ads watched with no reward, and a final ad that restarted on a loop.

Paid Filters, Long Waits

Paying does not promise a fast match. A September 2026 review, liked by close to 200 people, describes buying the membership for the gender filter and then waiting five minutes without meeting anyone.

Support That Rarely Answers

Most developer replies on Google Play repeat one line, that the team "could not verify your account here", and ask for an email. Reviewers who did email describe slow or missing answers, among them one from December 2025 who was blocked right after paying.

Monkey Bans, Appeals and the Data It Keeps

Monkey's guidelines allow a temporary or permanent suspension of matching or of the whole account, depending on the violation, at Monkey's discretion. Its terms go further and allow it to end an account immediately and without notice, "for any reason whatsoever". The Safety Center describes the everyday version: AI flags a problem, video chat is restricted, and the restriction lifts once the account is cleared.

The published appeal route is an email to hello@monkey.app, sent from the address on the account with your user ID and the date access stopped. Age flags go through the ID appeal described above. Opening a second account while you wait tends to undo the case that the first ban was a mistake, and repeat violations end in a permanent suspension.

Its privacy policy lists what registration may collect: username, name, profile picture, a selfie, date of birth, phone number, phone book content, address, email, gender, and your Instagram details and friend list. With your consent it can add location, down to GPS. Unless you opt out in settings, other users can discover your profile, and parts of a public profile can be seen beyond the app.

On video, Monkey's homepage says AI monitors live video chat in real time. The privacy policy adds that photos and videos captured by other users can be stored and used by Monkey or by third parties such as Instagram or Snapchat for moderation. Deleting your account disables it for 30 days before removal begins, and some traffic data may be kept for a year.
