What Is Chatville?

Chatville, styled ChatVille by the site and often typed as chat ville, is a browser webcam chat that sells itself as a Chatroulette alternative. Instead of a random video chat with one stranger, it opens into public rooms where you can watch up to four cameras at once, see who is watching you and invite someone to a private chat.

It is an old name: the Internet Archive holds records of chatville.com going back to 2010. You enter as a guest with a nickname and your gender, accept the rules and pick a room; a free account adds your own camera, a reserved nickname and members only rooms. Its home page likens the whole thing to a virtual nightclub.

Is Chatville safe? The basics exist: a Block button, moderators in the rooms and a Report Abuse form that promises to investigate complaints within 24 hours. The limits are written down too: blocks you set clear when you log out, and its terms admit that community reporting may not catch every underage user.

No company is named. The terms speak only of ChatVille and its affiliates, choose the laws of the United Kingdom, send disputes to courts in Hillsborough County, Florida, give you six months to bring a claim and cap the site's liability at fifty US dollars.

The chat window itself loads from cammedia.com, the site of Cam Media Ltd, which says its video chat software powers many popular websites. We compared Chatville's terms and privacy policy with those of more than a dozen video chat brands and found no shared sentences, so its rules are its own.

Is Chatville Free? Tokens and VIP Explained

For watching and chatting, yes, and a basic account is free too. Money enters in three places: Tokens, which cost 0.09 USD each, private chats that some members charge for by the minute, and VIP status, which decides whether a man can keep his camera on.

VIP is not a plan you subscribe to. Any member holding 270 Tokens or more is VIP, which at the listed price is 24.30 USD kept in the account. Men who have been members for 30 days are asked to become VIP or keep that balance to go on showing their camera; without it they can still watch.

Tokens also pay for tips, room entry set by room owners, and premium avatars and badges that the chat window calls final purchases. Some verified members can turn Tokens into money and set a per minute rate for private chats that is drawn automatically every few seconds once they accept your invite.

What Chatville Records and Who Sees It

Your face can end up as a picture. The terms say that when you log in with your webcam on, your image may be captured for your user thumbnail, and that you authorise this. Members can also take profile pictures straight from the camera.

The policy does set limits. Staff see personal data only when they need it, you can ask for your data to be corrected or deleted free of charge, and the site says it will not use personal information for new purposes without asking you first.
